Finnish firm Ahlstrom-Munksjö has launched FiltEV, a new comprehensive platform of high-performance filtration materials for electric vehicles. The Nordic company maintains that as the electric charging infrastructure expands and offers fast and reliable charging, it is estimated that exclusively electric vehicles will represent 25% of passenger car production in 2030. Ahlstrom-Munksjö has developed several solutions to address customer needs for filter materials for cabin thermal management, transmission and battery cooling.
Cedric Vallet, Head of Business Development, Industrial Filtration and New Vehicles, explains that “using our extensive existing technology platforms, we plan to further expand our portfolio of solutions in this field, also including fuel cell air intake, in the next few months ". The expectation is that the filtration market for electric vehicles will grow around 35% annually until 2030, reaching approximately 100 million euros.
Sources from Ahlstrom-Munksjö, which has relevant experience in engine filtration, point out that the electrification trend will require energy storage solutions, where fiber-based materials are widely used. Thanks to its extensive experience in cellulose, glass microfibers and specialty nonwovens, Ahlstrom-Munksjö is also developing a full range of energy storage solutions under the FortiCell product platform.
From the Finnish company they state that the quality of the air in the cabin is an increasingly important factor in the design of new generations of vehicles. By filtering harmful particles, microorganisms and gases, air filters create a healthier cabin environment and improve driving comfort. Ahlstrom-Munksjö products protect against coarse, fine and ultrafine particles, including bacteria and viruses; it combines particle and gas removal for a higher level of protection and comfort. Regarding the filtration of cooling fluids, they have a reliable shielding of the thermal management system.
On the other hand, Ahlstrom-Munksjö points out that the efficiency and useful life of the battery, fuel cell units and electric motors of electric vehicles depends largely on the ability to keep them in a narrow temperature window, regardless of the conditions of use. Additional products, including fuel cell air intake solutions, will be launched under the FiltEV platform in the coming months.
